Opelika: Police officer will not face charges in Airman shooting [via Facebook]
Opelika Police Officer Phillip Hancock shot and nearly killed an unarmed man, who posed no actual threat to him at all, out on I-85 back in March. The police were called in to investigate the police, and then they got a secret grand jury proceeding to conclude that the police shouldn’t face any prosecution for opening fire on the unarmed victim of a car accident.
“‘Under state law, police officers can use deadly force against an unarmed suspect if the officer believes the suspect could cause serious bodily harm to the officer or another person,’ [Opelika Police Chief John McEahern] stated. ‘There is no requirement that one has to be armed for an officer to use deadly force. If an officer has a reasonable belief that his life, or someone else’s life is in danger, THAT DECISION CANNOT BE QUESTIONED LATER by Monday morning quarterbacking.’â€
In the view of Opelika police, police (1) have an absolute right to open fire on unarmed men for which (2) they legally cannot be held accountable for their decisions to use violence.
