I think that the one discovery I’ve made in the last year that has most improved my quality of life was how to turn on the compose key functionality in Ubuntu. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ComposeKey They recommend sacrificing one of your Win keys. Personally, I sacrificed CapsLock for my personal typographical playground.

An alternative to the GnomeCharacterMapapplication is to use Compose Key sequences. Once the required sequences have been learned this can be the most effective way to type often used special characters.The instructions below have been tested by several users with Ubuntu versions from 8.10 to 10.04.
