You ever notice how far a newspaper writer will go out of their way, just to avoid writing “Police killed a man” in so many words?

What do you feel is the best translation for βαρβαροι if you are translating a passage about a fight in Armenia taken from Xenophon? “Barbarbians” would be the traditional translation (and one that etymologically comes from the Greek), but in the last 2300+ years it has taken on a lot of anthropological and political baggage it didn’t necessarily have at the time (esp. for a writer like Xenophon, who sometimes admired and spent a lot of time with Asian “βαρβαροι”). Alternatives?
