Okay LazyWeb, anyone know of literature discussing the use of the name “Pompey,” or “Pomp” for short, as a name for African-American slaves in the colonial or antebellum period? The standard interpretation is that this is one of several popular classical names imposed by masters. OTOH Keith Baird and Mary Twining assert, without much argument, in their essay on Gullah basket names (“Names and Naming in the Sea Islands”) that “Pompey” is not really a classical reference at all, but an Anglicization or white misinterpretation of the African-derived name Pambi. Is there any further literature that digs in on this question, or on interpretation of classical names under slavery more generally?
