What do you feel is the best translation for βαÏβαÏοι if you are translating a passage about a fight in Armenia taken from Xenophon?
“Barbarbians†would be the traditional translation (and one that etymologically comes from the Greek), but in the last 2300+ years it has taken on a lot of anthropological and political baggage it didn’t necessarily have at the time (esp. for a writer like Xenophon, who sometimes admired and spent a lot of time with Asian “βαÏβαÏοιâ€). Alternatives?
