If you’re really stressing out about the placement of apostrophes in greengrocers’ plurals (“Best Banana’s, $1/lb,” “Russet Potato’s,” that sort of thing), then why not take a day off and try putting your energy into a different typographical crusade for a while? Like maybe bringing back the diaeresis in coöperation and zoölogy, or maybe promoting the use of thorn (Þ/þ) and eth (Ã/ð) in place of the ungainly catch-all “th”? That would be no less useful to linguistic understanding than fixing the world’s apostrophes. Quite possibly more so. And it would at least be less hackneyed and more entertaining.
