Of course, the major definitive difference between the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise, and the original Star Trek movie franchise, is that literally all of the original-cast Star Trek movies were about Kirk, and the rest of the crew, and everyone that they knew, getting old. And the new films are specifically all about Kirk, and the rest of the crew, and everyone that they meet, being incredibly young and everything happening for the first time. This creates a lot of interesting shifts; it also creates a lot of really pretty serious problems for plotting and for emotional resonances and registers, probably a lot more problems than the writers seem to realize.
