Thought you might be interested to know that I’ve incorporated something of your suggestion into the Development Version of FeedWordPress (hence, into the upcoming next public release of FWP). Specifically, I bumped up the default feed timeout to 20 seconds, and also created an interface under Syndication –> Feeds & Updates to allow you nudge that setting up or down as desired.
